Sunshine State Young Readers Award (SSYRA)

SSYRA 2017-2018

SSYRA is the acronym for Sunshine State Young Readers’ Award.  Fifteen books have been given this award and students are eager to check them out and read!  Students who read the books will earn special prizes and privileges.  At the end of this school year, interested students can try out for ORE’s team for this year’s Battle of the Books.  Battle of the Books is a District reading incentive event where “experts” from each school come together to show what they now and demonstrate their knowledge of the SSYRA books they have read.

The SSYRA is coming for primary grades!

The Sunshine State Young Readers Award Jr. (SSYRA Jr) is much like the SSYRA program for intermediate grades.

Orange River students in kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grades will be able to participate in this program.  Our goal is to develop student interest in reading for pleasure by exposing them to a wide range of appropriate literature. Sunshine State Jr.books are selected for their wide appeal, literary value, varied genres, curriculum connections, and/or multicultural representation. Teachers will work together to read them in a small group setting, and to encourage students who can read, to read them independently to develop skills in fluency and comprehension. Students will be eligible to vote for their favorite book in the spring, just like the intermediate grades.
